Loretta Rose Anna Coan, 92, died peacefully on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 in Boise, Idaho.
Loretta was born on June 28, 1926 in Thief River Falls, MN, to Louis and Elizabeth LaCount. She was the fifth of seven children, attending a one room schoolhouse in MN. At 16, Loretta met Rolland when he and his Dad drilled a well at her parents’ home. Rolland and Loretta married on January 21, 1943 in Oakland, CA. Together, they had three sons Ronald (1949), Larry (1952) and Jimmy (1957), living in Pollock Pines, CA for 20 plus years. While raising her family, Loretta worked as a phone operator and a waitress in CA. In 1969, the family moved to Star, Idaho, where she worked at the local store and was a member of the Holy Apostles Catholic Parish. She spent the following years taking care of her three boys, who at different times suffered from Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), a rare disease. The boys died of ALD in the late 1990’s and then Rolland passed on from heart failure in 2000.
After her family passed on, Loretta moved to the LaPlaya Neighborhood in Meridian and began to rebuild her life, enjoying many potluck and gatherings with dear friends in the over 55 community. Throughout her life, she was an accomplished seamstress, cook, baker and homemaker, but her favorite roles were Mother, Grandma and Great-Grandma. In 2014 at age 88, Loretta moved to Garden Plaza Independent Living in Boise, attending Sunday Mass there and enjoying bingo, arts, crafts and listening to music programs. She created strong bonds of friendship with her caregivers and vice versa. She loved her family fiercely and cherished her friends and those friends who became her family. And we all loved her right back.
Loretta is survived by her granddaughters: Jayme (Jimmy) McDonald, Jennifer (Chris) Krause, both of Texas, Christine (Zak) Waller and great-grandchildren: Chase and Cheyenne Borchardt, all of Idaho.
She was preceded in death by her 6 siblings, her husband, Rolland of 57 years; her three sons: Ronald in 1995, Larry in 1997 and Jim in 1998.
Memorials may be made in her name to the United Leukodystrophy Foundation Inc., 224 N. 2nd Street, Suite 2, DeKalb, IL 60115.
