Michael P. Brkljacich, 86, of Meridian passed away on Thursday, December 6, 2018. Mike was born in Chicago, Illinois on April 26, 1932 to Matté and Manda Brkljacic, he was one of three brothers. He attended John L. Marsh Elementary School, graduating in January of 1946. Mike graduated from Chicago Vocational High School graduating in January of 1950.
Mike went to work at Republic Steel in the metallurgical laboratory and worked there until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in October of 1952. He served in the Korean War with the Fifth Regimental combat for a year. After the war he was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas where he played football and was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant in October of 1954.
He went to the College of Idaho in September of 1955 where he received a scholarship in football. While there he made Honorable Mention All-Conference in both football and basketball. He graduated in June of 1959 with a degree in Education.
He met his future wife, Patricia Murphy, in Caldwell, Idaho and they were married June 25, 1960 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
He and Pat moved to California where he taught for twenty-nine years, coached football for twenty years and got his Master’s degree in Education from San Jose State University. After retiring in 1990 they moved back to Idaho where they resided in Meridian.
They had five wonderful children: Matt (Carol), Ann Vogel, Kathy (Mike Wooten), Marie (Chris Coles), and Rob. From them came four terrific grandchildren: Erica and Beth Barraza, Katelyn Brkljacich and Samantha Lumbreras whom he loved tremendously.
He belonged to Holy Apostles Catholic Church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus since January of 1956 and was proud of his Catholic faith and his Croatian heritage.
Mike was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia; daughter, Kathy; his parents; brother, George and his wife, Lotte and brother, Martin. Survivors include his four remaining children and their spouses, along with his granddaughters, nephews: George and Jim; niece, Lynn; sister-in-law, Helen and great friends all of whom he loved greatly.
A vigil service will be held at 7:00 PM on Friday, December 14th. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Saturday, December 15th, both services will be held at Holy Apostles Catholic Church, 6300 N. Meridian Rd. in Meridian.
