On Monday, February 4, 2019 Erica Doris Oswald was welcomed into Jesus’ loving arms after a Christ-centered life here on earth. She was born September 27, 1932 to Leopold and Gertrude Hudlet in Buffalo, NY. She was the 3rd child of her seven siblings. At a young age, she learned to bake in her grandfather’s bakery and carried that talent throughout her life baking delicious treats for her family at gatherings. Her family moved to Boise in 1948 where she attended Boise High School and Catherine Anacabe Beauty School.
She met the love of her life, James E. Oswald, in the summer of 1950 at a church picnic. They were married on December 5th that same year. They were blessed with four beautiful children and raised them in the Boise area until they settled in Kuna in 1967. In 1976, she began her gospel ministry traveling across the United States and throughout the world. She was very proud that she could spread God’s word with her singing voice to people in eight different countries. She especially enjoyed sharing her testimony with the children she met along her way. Later in life, she continued to teach children about the Lord while volunteering at summer church camps.
She was honored to sing at many events such as weddings and funerals of loved ones, Idaho Governor’s inaugural celebrations, the 1985 US Governor’s Conference in McCall, and numerous local events.
Her family remembers her as the ultimate prayer warrior. When anyone needed prayer, she would be the first to say one with them or start up a prayer chain. One of her many joys was creating things for those she loved. Whether it was a drawing or a crocheted blanket, she loved to bring a smile to someone’s face with a handmade gift. Once she had created blankets for her entire family, she began to make them to donate to fundraising events and as gifts for dignitaries such as former Governor Butch Otter and former President George W. Bush. She enjoyed spending time with her family playing games and laughing.
For the last 18 years, Erica and James made their home in Placerville, Idaho where they made many long lasting friendships . Erica enjoyed watching all the wildlife who visited their mountain home, especially her hummingbirds. She often referred to it as "God's beautiful country. Where the flowers bloom and the pine trees are tall."
She is preceded in death by both her parents; sister, Eleonore; brother, Herbert; baby brother, Ray; sons, Timothy and James D.; and great-grandchildren, Marquel and Mason.
She is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, James Edward; brother, David (Jean) Hudlet; sisters: Gail James and Heidi Sophia Hudlet; daughters: Jeri (Dave) Smith and Sheri (Jim) Russell; daughter-in-law, Susan Oswald; grandchildren:, Katrina (Travis) Helmick, Kevin (Carolyn) Stroebel, Kurt (Cherilyn) Stroebel, Kasara (JJ) Balderas, KelliJo (Greg) Johnson, Jim Oswald, Eric (Fran) Oswald and Courtney (Matthew) Emry. Erica had a total of 16 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, 9 great great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and numerous others who knew her as “Mom,” “Grandma,” and “Great Grandma”.
The family would like to thank the staff at Horizon Hospice, especially Wendy, Joyce and Chaplain Tom, for their support and caring over the last year. Donations can be made in Erica’s honor to Majestic View Ministry, 484 Doonan View Dr. Troy, MT 59935.
