Steven "Steve" V. Hatcher was born in Cascade, Idaho on May 14, 1955. He passed away in a car accident in Eagle, Idaho on June 11, 2019.
He was raised by his mother, Jean Sayer, along with his brothers Jim and Gene and sister, Terry in Garden Valley, Idaho. He graduated from Garden Valley High School in 1973, where he lettered in football, wrestling, and track. He served in the US Army from 1973 to 1976. He was a logger and saw mill worker while living in Garden Valley. He worked as a flooring installer for nearly all of his adult life until his passing.
Steve loved to dance. As a young adult, he picked up line dancing and country swing. He often walked from Garden Valley to Idaho City in his moccasins to go dancing, making friends with everyone he met. He taught line dancing classes in Boise and Garden Valley, and it was rare he would sit a song out as there was always a line of dance partners waiting for their chance to be twirled around by him on the dance floor. And in the midst of dancing, he could twirl his dance partner out, while simultaneously spinning his cowboy hat on his fingers before pulling her back in while he placed his hat back on. He was Fred Astaire in cowboy boots.
He was also known for being able to imitate the sound of a train whistle, something that he got many requests for from his nieces and nephews, and it earned him the nickname Choo Choo. Later in life, Steve taught himself how to play the guitar. He would perform and sing country ballads, and recite cowboy poetry for family and friends.
If Steve had a tagline, it would have been "Heart of Gold." This was said about him by many who knew him. He was always humble, happy, and a hard worker. Since 2011, he accompanied his mom to her church on Sundays. He has always been willing to come to anyone’s assistance, always feeling they would return the favor.
Steve was preceded in death by his grandparents, his stepfather, Fred Sayer, and his nephew, Kelly Hatcher. He is survived by his mother Jean Sayer of Meridian; his brothers, Jim Hatcher, of Helena, MT, Gene Hatcher of Star, and his sister, Terry McCarthy of Meridian; his nephew Patrick, and nieces, Jamie, Jessica and Charlotte; and his two half brothers, Rodney Hatcher of Conyers, GA and Mike Hatcher of Mobile, AL.
Contributions in Steve’s memory may be made to the GVHS Alumni Scholarship Fund, Garden Valley High School. 1053 Banks Lowman Road, Garden Valley, ID 83622.
