Obituary of Dorothe L. Raisch

Our mother, Dorothe L. Raisch, passed from this life at the age of 91 on Christmas Day 2012. On Wednesday, January 2nd, a visitation at Accent Funeral Home, 1303 N. Main, Meridian, will occur from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. A committal ceremony at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery will take place at 10:00 am on Thursday, January 3rd, followed by a memorial service at 11:30 am at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, corner of Orchard and Cassia, in Boise. A separate memorial reception will also occur at 10:30 am, Friday, January 4, Valley View Garden Plaza, 1130 Allumbaugh, Boise. Mom was born to Ray and Florence Jacobia on October, 26, 1921, on the same farm near Postville, Iowa that remained in her family for 138 years. After high school she graduated from the Iowa State Teacher’s College and began her career as a school teacher. During World War II she took a break from teaching and went to work in Washington DC at the Treasury Dept to assist in the war effort and to be closer to the love of her life who was stationed at Annapolis, MD. On December 17, 1944, Mom married Dad, Norman Raisch, at the Lutheran church in Postville while he was on leave. After the war ended, Dad and she began their married life farming with his father and then on to another farm in Chapin, Iowa. During that time four children were born, three girls and one son. In 1959 Dad led Mom on an adventure to an Idaho homestead on the Northside Project near Minidoka. After five years she and Dad went back to Iowa to farm for two years but returned to Idaho to another farm north of Rupert because they loved the state and the wonderful friendships they formed with other homesteaders. Mom was every bit a partner in the business of farming and financial support of the family. During the school year she taught in both the Minidoka County and Iowa school districts. In the summer she worked with Dad irrigating with siphon tubes, hauling grain to the elevator and riding the potato harvester to remove dirt clods and roots. When she wasn’t in the field, she was growing a huge garden, canning, and sewing clothes for her family. After Mom retired from teaching she and Dad were able to spend their winters snowmobiling and vacationing in Arizona where they established many new and lasting friendships. In 1985 they retired from farming and settled in Meridian where they joined the Good Sam Club and spent many weekends camping and traveling to various spots, including a trip to Alaska on the Yukon highway. After 62 years of marriage, Dad passed away, and Mom moved to Valley View Garden Plaza in Boise. There she had the second “time of her life” as a member of that community. She lived in what she referred to as a “resort” for 5 ½ yrs. She enjoyed all the activities offered (concerts, church services, card games, wii bowling, frequent outings, exercise and music classes). She never had a lack of good company and spoke so fondly of her breakfast and supper companions, book club members, Quiddler, cribbage, and bowling competitors. Mom is survived by one sister, Lorayne Kesterson, TX, daughters Jean (Glennys) Lunde, Osage, IA, Marilyn (Bob) Friday, Meridian, Kathryn (Lynn) Nokes, Garden Valley, and son Dennis (Michele) Raisch, Albuquerque. She leaves ten grandchildren, Gregg Lunde, IA, Angie (Jay) Montgomery, MN, Matt (Allyson) Lunde, IL; Bobbi (Greg) Wooten, Kuna, Jeff (Heather) Friday, Boise, Jason (Kris) Friday, Meridian; Adam (Tierney) Nokes, Garden Valley, Andrew Nokes, Boise; Kevin and Shelby Raisch. She has also been gifted with 12 great grandchildren. Mom was preceded in death by her parents and one brother and sister. We will remember our Mom and Grandma as being very gracious, warm, witty, and learned; solid in her faith and love of life and family. She was the best of friends and will be dearly missed. We give special thanks to Mom’s extended “family” at the Valley View Garden Plaza, to St. Al’s Hospice staff of Athena, Carol, Colleen and Kelly, to the Trinity Home Care staff and aides, and finally to the Valley View Life Care staff for all they have done to make Mom’s life comfortable and memorable. We are also so grateful for the frequent visits she had with her friends from Garden Plaza and her pastor, Timothy Pauls, during her final days. Memorials in Dorothe’s name may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 5009 Cassia, Boise, ID 83705. Remembrances may be left for Dorothe’s family at www.AccentFuneral.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Accent Funeral Home, Meridian.
