Obituary of Huey Richard Reed
Huey R. Reed passed away on November 6, 2021. He was born October 9, 1935, at St. Luke’s Hospital here in Boise, Idaho, to Huey Erval Reed and Lillian Hobbs Reed. Huey attended Lowell Elementary School, North Junior High School, and graduated from Boise High School in 1954. Baseball was the love of his life until he met a little red headed girl by the name of Ruth in the last year of junior high school. They dated all through high school. Huey worked that summer for the forest service out of Cascade, Idaho.
Huey and Ruth were married in September, 1955, and the next day moved to Pullman, Washington, where Huey was enrolled at Washington State College. Both Huey and Ruth worked while he attended college. Huey graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Microbiology and Public Health. During the college years, Huey and Ruth had two beautiful children, Debra Lynn and Huey Wray.
Upon graduation Huey accepted a position in public health in Napa, California. Their third beautiful child, Lilli Ann, was born in Napa, California. After two years in California the couple’s dream of returning to Idaho was realized when Huey accepted a position with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare as a hospital and nursing home consultant. Huey’s love of the outdoors had the family enjoying skiing, tennis, fishing and traveling throughout Idaho.
In 1965 Huey received an educational grant and the family returned to California where Huey attended the University of California at Berkeley graduating a year later with a Master’s degree in Public Health Administration. Back home in Boise Huey had a series of positions with the State Department of Health and Welfare including Chief of Hospital and Nursing Home Licensing and Chief of the Bureau of Hospital and Nursing Home Construction.
In 1978 Huey resigned from the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare taking a position as Director of the North Central Health District in Lewiston, Idaho, where he and Ruth spent eight very happy years enjoying the wonderful outdoor opportunities of North Central Idaho and the surrounding states. They found Lewiston one of the friendliest communities they had ever experienced and they made many friends. Returning to Boise in 1985, Huey became Director of the Central District Health Department in Boise where he continued to work until his retirement in 1992.
During Huey’s career he received many honors and awards including: Chairman of the Board of St. Joseph’s Hospital in Lewiston, Idaho; Chairman of the Governor’s Statewide Health Coordinating Committee, and President of the Idaho Public Health Association.
