We all grieve for lost friends and family but certain people seem to affect our lives a bit more than others. I have to put Kenny in that category. His contagious smile and positive attitude made an impact on all who were lucky enough to get to know him. I first met Kenny in Bozeman when he started to date my old school chum Cheri back in the 70’s. To say we liked to party is a bit of an understatement but luckily we matured and left that phase of our lives behind us. Our families both ended up back in Lewistown and somewhere along the way Kenny turned his life over to Christ. He was an inspiration in our church, playing for the folk group week after week. His exuberance was contagious with the other members of the folk group and for the parishioners who came to celebrate mass. He helped bring the Cursillo movement to St. Leos and was an active member of that group for many years. Even after they moved to Billings Kenny would come back to Lewistown to play music for our weekends. He was instrumental in my Christian formation and we sure have had a lot of interesting discussions on who God is and how He directs our lives. Our discussions on who gets to heaven and who doesn’t were always lengthy and interesting. Kenny was a great example of how to do it yourself when it came to home remodel projects. Their house in Lewistown was pretty much totally renovated and when He visited Lewistown a few years ago it was back on the market. I took him to see the house and he kept saying “We did this and we did that”. It hadn’t had a lot of updates since they moved but it didn’t really need anymore. That house is kind of his legacy in Lewistown. Kenny was not afraid to try new things. He sold real estate, had a furniture store and even tried his had and silver speculation. Those weren’t really his calling so he got back to doing what he did best and that was being a lab tech, Husband, father and friend. The Meissner’s, Hagen’s and us had some great trips together. We went to San Francisco and the first night we went to a bar that originated the Irish Coffee. Kenny was always looking for ways to save a buck so when we all ordered coffees he ordered a gin and tonic and proudly exclaimed “Hey this round is on me”. Imagine his surprise when he got the bill and found out our coffees were Irish Coffees and the bill reflected that. He was bit hard of hearing and he just didn’t hear us say we were getting Irish Coffees. His scowl didn’t last to long. Kenny like to golf. Now there is an understatement. I think his main reason for going on these trips is so we could score some golf rounds while we doing the planning sessions. The girls were always vey gracious with our planning times. When we got to San Francisco we went to our condo and drew cards for who got which room. Meissner drew a 9, Kenny a Jack and I drew and Ace. They both said in unison “Ace is low”. They had a tendency to gang up on me. They were from Glendive and wasn’t. After that I always verified that an Ace was high. Kenny was an inaugural member of the the Road Runner Classic golf tournament held in AZ each year. He won the green jacket one year but he always seemed to be in the final four on the last day. Did I mention that Kenny liked to golf? I would be remiss not to talk about Ken’s greatest passion. His wife Cheri, His kids, Scott, Amy and Christine and their spouses and especially his grandchildren. His love for them was awe inspiring and truly gave meaning to his life. They are his greatest legacy and his example as a husband, father and grandfather is a lesson for all of us. To be blessed with his family was his greatest achievement.
I have a bunch of other stories as we all do of how Kenny affected my life but I will always be thankful to him for being such an exemplary example of what a Christian is and helping me along the way in my walk with Christ. I will miss his instructions on the golf course and his self critiquing of each of his shots but mostly his positive attitude, smile and laugh. God Bless you Kenny and may the angels lead you into paradise.

When I was maybe 8 or 9 years old, I slept over at Ken's house on his couch, and he put a blanket over me as I rested under a sheet. I thought that was so nice of him, I know my brothers would never think of doing something like that. He was the cousin who was extremely concerned about my welfare after major surgery in Denver two years ago. I only wish he could have seen my physical improvement. My thoughts are with his family, wife, children, grandchildren and peace be with you.

Kenny was always there to provide a smile and advise to anyone who needed an uplift. As his cousin I was fortunate to get an abundance of tender loving care and advise. I will always remember and treasure our time spent together. I can tell you Kenny is already enjoying his time in heaven, saying hi to all those who went before us and enjoying his first round of golf with Christ Your Cousin and Brother in Christ Ron.

I can't think of much that my cousin missed in life. He sure had a way to get into the better aspects of "good stuff"! as Father Dan would say. Ken was my Cursillo sponsor also, a journey that will never end. Yes, I was the guy that provided Ken with his first 6 pack while he was in high school. What's a cousin for? Anyway, that we met again in Lewistown was not a coincidence. He mentored my spiritual life for many years. Cheri, Scott, Kristin and Amy; many of us here in Lewistown will be gathered outside at the Mary Garden of Saint Leo's Church at noon this Friday to pray, sing and give thanks for all of you and Ken. There may even be a guitar or two there. Anyway, may you find Peace, always Peace! Ron and Irene Hrubes

Kenny was such a good friend for so many years. I knew him way back in junior high school. One favorite memory is our pole vaulting pit. We dug a pit in a lot adjacent to his home. We went around to lumberyards and collected sawdust to fill our pit. We built the uprights and cross bar. But, we need a vaulting pole. It just so happened my mother had a 10 or 12 foot curtain rod in our basement. We used that, much to my mother's disappointment. She was not happy with us. We continued our vaulting career into high school track. I remember one track event where only he and I were left in the pole vaulting competition. He cleared 10 feet. I cleared 9'9". We both lettered.
I have so many wonderful memories of Ken, many of them golfing memories. I was there when he got a hole in one on the par 3, 17th hole at Cottonwood Creek in Bozeman. Golf was truly a passion for him. We played many rounds together. I imagine by now he has found the most beautiful course on the other side. No need to call for t-times. Just go out and play. He is hitting them long and straight.
Kenny, you were always an inspiration tor me. You taught me many things by your example. (And by your golf tips, such as, "when playing irons you need to hit down on the ball".) Your joy for life was infectious. Your spiritual life was evident through your music, your time at St. Leo's, and in so many other ways. You were my Cum Christo sponsor. I am fortunate and grateful that our lives intertwined. I love you and miss you my dear friend.

Maggie and I were sincerely saddened to hear of Ken's passing. We have so many fond memories of Ken, starting with our time at St. Leo's where we loved the folk music group and always enjoyed the pure joy Ken brought to the group. He was always willing to help with the youth group activities. He brought positivity and enthusiasm to our family and to so many others. I felt very fortunate to have had the Hagen kids attend the school where I served as principal. Ken and Cheri were supportive parents and excellent role models. We have nothing but respect for the Hagen family and wish all of them peace and the comfort of warm memories. We are thankful our paths crossed, and better for it.
